One dollar

Today was the "AppleFest" at my church.  A fun event that the whole church can get involved in.  There was face painting, a jump-house, plenty of food prepared by the United Methodist Men, dessert prepared by the Bazaar ladies, free popcorn, a "fishing" pool, and a few other things.  Additionally, there was a clothing give-away.  Admittedly not the best organized, but it happened.  I put the word out, and people brought gently-used clothes to give away.  Many people helped to sort, fold, and prepare the clothes for today - a few that I know about, and probably more that I don't know about.  I was in and out of the clothes area periodically today to check on things, and each time I could tell a few more clothes were being taken.  I had several church members ask me how things were going with the clothes, and I kept telling them "good" or "great".  Truth be told, I think if one person left with some clothes, then it served its purpose.  I had a woman tell me last Sunday that she would distribute any of the leftover clothes to Grand Avenue Temple and the Clay County Clothes Closet, and she had helped me with a previous clothing drive as well.  She is but one of the few that played a key role today.  And there was one other person as well.

One of the times I went back in, one of the Bazaar women - Wanda - stopped me.  She held out her hand, and gave me a dollar.  It was not a crisp, new dollar bill, but a worn, crumpled one, that looked like it had seen better days.  I turned it over in my hands, and I said, "What's this for?"  And Wanda told me this --  she said that a young woman had gone upstairs to the clothing give-away.  She had been up there awhile, and when she came back down, she had a jean-jacket over her arm.  And she stopped at the Bazaar desk, and handed over the dollar to Wanda.  Wanda told her that the clothing give-away was just that - a give-away, and that no money was necessary, and Wanda tried to give the dollar back.  The young woman wouldn't hear of it, and pressed the dollar into Wanda's hand, I imagine with some insistence.  Wanda took the dollar, and the young woman went on her way, with her jean-jacket over her arm.

I said to someone the other day, you never know what someone else is going through.  I have no idea what that young woman was going through.  Perhaps she had been laid off recently, and she needed a break from her family for a bit.  Maybe her husband had been called in to work today, and she was out on her own for awhile.  Maybe her son had passed away recently, and the jean-jacket reminded her of him, and offered her some comfort.  Whatever the reason, she felt the need to say "thanks" with a dollar bill.  And not a crisp, new dollar bill - but a worn, crumpled one.  Kinda like we all are, dontcha think?

May God continue to be present in your life.

Camp time!

Well, next week I'll be at Camp Jo-Ota in Clarence, MO as a church camp counselor, so I'll be blogging even less - is that possible?  Oh well -- have a great week and keep me and the other campers in your thoughts and prayers!

Hey batta batta batta .. suh-wing!!

There's nothing like a good baseball movie to help you forget what's bothering you.

The Rookie is on AMC right now, and I'm having so much fun watching it.  While I never did much outside of little league, The Rookie is a fun movie to watch, and Dennis Quaid is a joy to watch.  His speech to the boys about having dreams is a classic, even if a bit trite - "you quit on me, and worse, you quit on yourselves" - and then of course the boys win the district title, forcing Quaid to keep his word and try out for a pro team.

There's nothing like a good baseball movie to help you forget what's bothering you.

Church stuff is really eating at me right now.  The "business" people are in charge of most of the things at the church, and the spiritual part of what we do - I feel - is being lost.  The Church Council chair called me a couple of nights ago, and wanted to know if he could put my name up as a potential to lead the council next year.  I'm torn with this - I believe I could do a fairly good job, but I also know that I don't take hearing criticism well, whether it's about me or someone else.  And right now, our church is hurting.  Noone wants to point the finger directly.

There's nothing like a good baseball movie to help you forget what's bothering you.

Field of dreams was another classic that I've enjoyed - you may remember the tag line, "If you build it, they will come.".  And they do - and they play ball.  The smell of the dust, the pop of a ball hitting the glove, the crack of a bat, the roar of the crowd - it all transports you away to a magical place for a couple of hours where you can forget the problems of the world, and focus on the challenge of a pitcher trying to get a little white ball by a guy with a bat who wants to hit it.

There's nothing like a good baseball movie to help you forget what's bothering you.

Monday night the church council is taking a step they've not done before to my knowledge, and going out into the community to invite people to come to our church for a (free) community dinner on Thursday night.  Is the flier we're handing out perfect?  Nope.  Does it have contact info on both sides?  Nope.  But it's a try.  And we're reaching out the community -- a community that is no doubt hurting as much as we are.  People being laid off, facing potential divorces, not being able to pay bills - what can we offer them besides HOPE?  Maybe that's all we need to offer them is hope - and the knowledge that they're not alone.  We had two visitors in church today, and I was the liturgist - I'm liturgist for July (except for the last Sunday).  Was the service perfect?  Nope - but it was human.

There's nothing like a good baseball movie to help you forget what's bothering you.

Do you think the Disciples ever played games to take their mind off of their problems?

Bachelorette

The Bachelorette (the reality show I can't believe I watch) continues to amaze and astound me with her decision to keep Wes around.  <sigh>.

Not much to post right now -- enjoy the 4th of July, and celebrate safely!! :)
